Spain
A semi-exhaustive list of the best things we ate during a week in Spain. But first, some non-food activities:
- Rooftop tour of Seville Cathedral, Seville. Yeah you can explore tons of cathedrals in Spain, but on this tour you can go behind the scenes, into the walls and up on the roof and wave down at confused tourists.
- Naval Museum, Madrid. Lots of historical artifacts and intricately detailed model ships.
- Culinary Backstreets’ Made in Catalonia walking tour with Paula, Barcelona. Okay, this one is food-related. But over the course of ~5 hours or so we wound our way through Gràcia sampling food and meeting all kinds of interesting people.
Barcelona
Croquettes, tortilla, and moixama (dried tuna) - Bodega La Palma. Our favorite little bar of the trip.
Cap i pota - Gelida. The cap i pota was the highlight but the sardines and pork cheeks were also great. Lots of interesting Catalan dishes.
Xiuxo - Pastisseria Ideal. A bit like a deep fried croissant filled with custard. Absolutely amazing.
Tuber Negroni - Dr Stravinsky. There’s lots of high end mixology going on in Spain, but many are on the showy side. Dr Stravinsky is definitely going to be the most fun for cocktail nerds, Sips is closer to the middle, and Paradiso and Salmon Guru are for the gram.
“Obama” croquette - Paco Meralgo. A more modern tapas bar - a really popular option.
Pig and trotter terrine with white beans - La Pubilla. More offal - a super hearty breakfast.
Snails - Cal Boter
Pescaditos Fritos - Senyor Vermut
Cheesecake - Casa Amalia 1950
Madrid
Grilled mushrooms - La Oreja De Jaime
Zucchini flowers, Boletus with duck foie - El Cisne Azul
Veal pie - Corral de la Moreria
Cochinillo (fried pig head) and beef tendon with razor clams - La Tasqueria
Seville
Grilled mushrooms and raw radishes - Los Golondrinas
Pork cheeks (carrillada ibérica al Pedro Ximenez) - Casa Cuesta
Montaditos and other tapas - Bar Casa Morales
